Laurell Hamilton was born in Saskatchewan, resided in Alberta for many years, and retired to Nova Scotia twelve years ago. Since retiring, she has indulged her passion for painting exploring various media including pastel, coloured pencil, and acrylic.

Primarily self-taught, she has benefitted greatly from the instruction of Joan Gregory, Margaret Wiles, Sharon Hicks, and others at the Sackville Art Association Thursday Painters Group. She continually seeks ideas and instruction through various avenues including workshops, books, and internet resources. In 2004, she joined the Sackville (NB) Art Association, and has served as President since 2009. She is also a member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia. Laurell has exhibited at the Sackville Art Association Annual Members’ Show and the Cumberland County Open Art Exhibition, and is an annual donor of paintings to the Autumn House Fundraising Art Auction.

She loves to mentor fellow artists in painting sessions on topics such as acrylics (collage/texture painting), pastels, abstract approaches to art, and making the most of your personal painting style.
Artist Statement
My paintings reflect my connection to nature and my interest in self-expression as a path to personal development. I like interesting light effects and unusual angles and am particularly drawn to subjects with a mystical or mysterious quality. For me, color is the most compelling aspect of painting – creative use of color is what makes a painting sing.

I enjoy pastel and coloured pencil but I have fallen in love with acrylics and will be married to this versatile medium for the foreseeable future. I am continually delighted and inspired by the range of creative effects that are possible with acrylic.
